The 1952 Election was the 42nd quadrennial election between republican and military hero Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Democrat Adlai Stevenson. The Republican National Convention which was held in Chicago, July 7–11. After a bitter fight with Taft supporters, Eisenhower won the nomination on the first ballot. Eisenhower selected as his running mate Senator Richard M. Nixon of California, who had strong anti communist credentials. Among the pledges of the Republicans was to end the Korean War and to support the Taft-Harley Act, which restricted the activities of labor unions. The election was conducted against the backdrop of a "Red Scare", the fear of communism infiltrating the government. Despite his age, Eisenhower proved to be a perfect candidate with his wartime stories as a hero to the United States and many other contributions for the betterment of America and its citizens. Eisenhower won by more than six million votes, capturing 39 states and 442 electoral votes to Stevenson’s 9 states and 89 electoral votes.
